Hello. I'm Tammy.
I believe in the transformative power of authenticity and genuine connection. Together, we navigate the delicate balance between hope and acceptance, leaving an indelible mark on each other's lives."
Hospice nursing is often considered uncommon within the realm of healthcare, but it was precisely this uniqueness that drew me towards it. I found myself yearning for a type of nursing that went beyond the clinical tasks and allowed me to connect closely with the individuals I cared for.
In the fast-paced medical world, where efficiency often takes precedence, hospice nursing offers a different approach. It embraces the concept of slowing down and taking the time to engage with patients on a deeper level. Some folks would say I speak fast. Something I perhaps learned from my father who could run a mean auctioneering session: “Dollar-bid-now, Would-ya-bid, Bid-it-now, Would a bid it, Gotta get it, Now, Dollar, Money, Bid”.
Then, I learned to slow down. It was in slowing down that God molded me to listen intently, recognizing the importance of narratives that shape identity and providing comfort during a challenging time. I discovered that by listening to stories, fears, and hopes, I could provide a level of care that went beyond the medical aspect and touches the core of humanity.
I have learned that the essence of hospice nursing lies in the ability to see beyond the illness and connect with the person's spirit. It is about creating a safe space where vulnerability can be shared, fears can be expressed, and joys can be celebrated. It has taught me that healing extends beyond physical well-being and encompasses the emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of life.
There is a person behind the exterior. A story as individual and unique as ever.
But the beauty lies in the genuine connections you form with your patients and their families, providing comfort, compassion, and support during their end-of-life journey…without the mask.
The masks we wear in our daily lives, too, hides the story of us. The reason I love what I do, is because my patients taught me about the importance of taking my mask off too.
I am Tammy…your Nurse Guide.
